On October 22nd at 2:00 p.m., Friends Fellowship Community hosted an event titled "The History of the Apron." Attendees enjoyed a variety of nostalgic desserts including whoopie pies, apple dumplings, and old-fashioned oatmeal raisin cookies, all provided by the Friends Fellowship dining services department.
The program began with a presentation by Dana Shore, the Director of Sales, who introduced Friends Fellowship Community. Following her introduction, Dana and Barb Bell, Sales Counselor, delivered a presentation on "The History of the Apron," exploring its origins and highlighting its use by both women and men throughout history.
A beautiful display of various types of aprons was featured at the event. The presentation discussed a range of aprons, including migrant aprons and cobbler's aprons used for carrying green beans and harvesting from gardens, decorative embroidered aprons worn at weddings, and aprons used by blacksmiths, cooks, and farriers. The history of the apron spans many centuries.
Many attendees brought aprons from their childhood, as well as those worn by their mothers and grandmothers. Megan Broeker, Sales Associate and Grants Coordinator, shared her excitement about the apron she had sewn during 4-H as a young girl. Others also shared stories of aprons they had made for their sewing projects in 4-H. Each attendee had the chance to share stories and memories associated with these cherished aprons. One attendee brought a photo of her grandmother standing by a window in a cobbler's apron, recalling, "That is how I remember my grandmother; she always had an apron on." Another attendee displayed an apron decorated with handprints from her grandchildren, given to her as a Christmas gift.
The event was a heartwarming experience, allowing participants to reminisce and share their precious memories with the audience.
